All About Photography
Photography is another area I know and use in my career as an artist. It is a big, complex, and technically challenging field with a lot of misconceptions attached to it. I’m not here to argue or lecture on the subject—I want to help anyone that wants or needs to know more about using your camera to help you enjoy a new hobby or as a tool in your art career. I’ve heard some say photography is not an art, or that anyone can do it. Try it and see if you can consistently make good compositions and get the exposures right every time. Do your images have good composition and correct exposure? All it really takes is some degree of talent and some technical knowledge and practice. I think it’s worth the time and work it takes for those artists who want to see the benefits and have some fun learning how to use a Camera, whether it’s Film or Digital. What benefits you ask? Well I find I make better images in the field no matter what lighting conditions I’m working with. That means better reference material going into my drawings and creating better paintings! Using Studio lighting, I do most of my own digital images for printing proposes. And I use those same studio lights for any promotional materials I need for marketing my art. Why do all that work you ask? Well in my experience I find it rare when I find a commercial photographer or printer or marketing agency that does what I want when I want it and then gets it right, on time and at a good price. I’ve worked with some very good companies, but knowing what I do helps me work efficiently with them. Knowing their trade helps me communicate what I want more accurately with more realistic expectations of what they can do and can’t do for me—their customer. I’ve put together a Mini-Course to introduce photography to my studio visitors. The Photography Technique Mini-Course concentrates on the technical workings of the camera and everything that goes with the camera. For the most part there’s no difference between a film camera and a digital camera--the physics of light is the same. There’s a wealth of information included in the Photo Technique sections. My goal is to provide information with enough depth to adequately cover the subject, but not overburden you with vast amounts of technical information. For those of you who want or need more detailed information, I’ve included the titles and authors of several books that I highly recommend. If you have comments or suggestions, please use the
