The Heritage Series: Old Buildings
This stately manor house, one of many historic old buildings in Pennsylvania’s Valley Forge National Historic Park, served as General Washington’s headquarters, and stirs thoughts of our nation’s beginnings. This Heritage Series painting is Manor House in Summer. Soon after his arrival at Valley Forge in 1777, General Washington knew he needed to establish a headquarters to plan strategies and organize his troops. As was the custom, many of his officers shared and rented local farm houses. General Washington rented this house, owned by Issac Potts, from its occupant at the time, Mrs. Deborah Hewes. At his headquarters, Washington received visitors, and met with his staff and aides.
The house provided meeting space, the Headquarters kitchen, several bedrooms for army staff, as well as a bedroom for General and Mrs. Washington. Today, the house is maintained by the National Park Service and is open to visitors. During 2007-2008, much of the landscaping around the house will be removed and replaced to eliminate trees in poor health, and to restore the grounds. Be sure to visit the
